Ice Skating Club of Exeter (I-C-E)

Did you know?

The Ice Skating Club of Exeter, also known as ICE, is sanctioned by the USFSA (United Skates Figure Skating Association). Founded 20 years ago by skating parents, the club has members of all ages, and produces 2 shows each year (Holiday Show in December and Spring Show in June), as well as occasional skill testing sessions. We are a non-profit, volunteer run organization. All members and their families are encouraged, and needed, to help with club events.

Frequently Asked Questions

* I am interested in figure skating. How do I get started?

Beginning skaters typically enroll in the Learn-to-Skate (or LTS) program. Please inquire at the rink front desk or on the rink website for the next available LTS session

* Should I take private lessons?

Private lessons are available at any skill level. Lessons commonly focus on technique, learning, perfecting and polishing of jumps, spins, & footwork, as well as artistic presentation of a program for recreation or competition. Often, a skater will choose to spend 1 hour at a freestyle (figure skating) session. Typically, half an hour is spent on lesson time and half an hour is independent practice time. Current cost for ice is $21 for 1 hour or $10 for half an hour. Coaching fee is additional.

Skaters usually choose to take between 1-4 lessons each week. Your skater should consider private lessons if:

  • He/she absolutely loves to skate and wants to spend more time skating.
  • He/she would like to become a competitive skater or is preparing for a basic skills competition.
  • He/she wants to learn skating moves at a faster rate than they can be taught in a group lesson. Skaters at level 5 and above may especially want to consider this.
  • He/she is having trouble with a skill or believes their progression is stalled.

* How do I select a private coach?

  • Come to a freestyle skating session and observe staff while teaching lessons.
  • Talk to other parents.
  • Know your child’s goals, so you can choose someone to help achieve them.
  • Choose someone with whom you & your child have a rapport.
  • Chat with coaches to see who is accepting new skaters.
  • Contact Kathy Farrington, Director of Skating, to discuss private lessons by emailing kathyf@therinksatexeter.com.

*What is a Figure Skating Club?

A Figure Skating Club is for motivated skaters in the Learn-to-Skate program, and freestyle (private lesson) skaters who are ready to take their skating to the next level. Belonging to Ice Skating Club of Exeter provides membership with the US Figure Skating Association (USFSA), and allows a skater to enter USFSA sanctioned competitions and take USFSA skills tests. An ICE membership also allows a skater’s family to serve on the Board of Directors and the skater to participate in club activities such as shows, parties, events & fundraising.

* When should I join a Figure Skating Club?

The decision to join a Figure Skating Club can depend on many variables, including the skater’s attitude, desire, concentration and frequency of skating. If your skater answers “yes” to the majority of these statements, it’s probably time to join ICE.

  • Wishes to “just skate more” with other dedicated skaters
  • Wants to work privately with a dedicated coach
  • Desires to compete, test or perform on ice

* What is a test session?

Testing sessions are judged by certified officials from USFSA. Each level has 2 associated tests: a Moves in the Field (MIF) to be taken first and then a Freestyle test. Skaters competing in a USFSA sanctioned event skate at the level of their highest freestyle test passed. Skaters passing the highest test level in any skating discipline (Senior level) are known as Gold Medalists.

* What are competitions?

Competitions are fun! Skaters work on programs for testing and competition purposes. Competitions can occur throughout the year, and allow skaters to exhibit their skills along with skaters from other clubs in the area. Competition events are usually held for skaters based on test level, and include Basic Skills, Freestyle, and Excel (non-qualifying) levels.
