How Do I Become A Figure Skater?
Skaters typically begin in our Learn-to-Skate Basic Skills program,
with classes available for ages 3 through adult. These classes run year
round, in 6 or 8 week sessions. They are divided into 8 Basic Skills
Levels followed by Freeskate levels. Our instructors assume that some
skaters have no experience at all – the first skill taught is to sit on the
ice and learn how to get up by yourself. Basic levels 1-4 include skills
used by both Figure Skaters and Hockey Players. Basic Levels 5 and
up teach more advanced footwork skills plus beginning jumping and
spinning used by figure skaters only.
At any point in the learning process, some skaters choose to move to a
private coach. Private students often begin their lessons on public ice.
The student pays admission to the ice as well as a fee to the coach. 30
minute lessons range from $15-$30, depending on the level of the
coach. As they progress in skill level, skaters may move onto Freestyle
and Moves ice. These ice sessions are limited to 20 figure skaters,
Freestyle ice being the session used to practice jumps, spins and work
on individual programs, Moves ice being limited to footwork exercises.
In order to be eligible to test or compete, a skater must be a member of
the United States Figure Skating Association. The Ice Skating Club of
Exeter (I.C.E.), a registered club. Our club is great source of
information. Please feel free to
